ALTON has won silver at the 2013 Britain in Bloom competition.

The award was picked up at the annual Britain in Bloom Awards ceremony in Lincolnshire by town mayor Derek Gardner chairman of Alton Town Council recreation committee chairman Sue Hodder.

This was a first-time entry for Alton, having been nominated to represent the South and South East Region in the prestigious national competition.

Mr Gardner said: "With so many local groups and individuals involved in the overall In Bloom effort in the town each year, this award is the icing on the cake of a very successful year."
