CHILDREN, staff and governors at Alton Infant School celebrated the school’s 150th anniversary with the unveiling of a special commemorative stone.

They were joined for the occasion by town mayor Dean Phillips, Michael Thorne and Robin Kemp of Kemp & Stevens, who created and donated the stone, chairman of governors Allan Coombs, and centenarian Bob Weighton.

At the amazing age of 109, Mr Weighton is the oldest man in England.

In welcoming the guests, headteacher Jayne Broach said: “We are here this afternoon to dedicate a commemorative stone to celebrate 150 years of education on these premises that we now know as Alton Infant School.

“Schools have always been at the heart of the community and Alton Infant School is no exception. I feel extremely proud to be the headteacher at this memorable time as we celebrate 150 years.”

In calling on Mr Weighton to unveil the stone, Mrs Broach added: “Bob has long been a friend of the school and spent many hours over the years, passing on his wealth of knowledge and life experiences with our children in their classrooms.

“It is my great privilege to call on Bob to do us the honour of unveiling our commemorative stone.”
