AS banks and building societies close branches across the UK, one East Hampshire business is bucking the trend and achieving High Street success.

Doug Clanchy, who runs TaxAssist Accountants in Liss, near Petersfield, said: “For us, having our shop in a central location means we’re handy for local business owners who are able to drop in and discuss their book-keeping and accountancy needs during their working day.

“As banks and other financial services companies are closing their High Street branches because of falling usage, we’re seeing an increase in clients.”

Across the country, more than 1,000 bank branches have closed down over the past two years, and that figure could reach 2,000 by the end of this year.

And building societies and insurance providers are also now announcing a raft of UK-wide branch closures.

Mr Clanchy added: “Many business owners will recall the days when their local bank manager was a valued business contact and adviser.

“We can’t replace the banking service, of course, but we do find that many of our clients appreciate face-to-face meetings to discuss their business and accountancy needs.

“We’re a small business ourselves and specialise in small businesses so have a good understanding of the pressures they face.

“With the advent of digital accounting and new responsibilities for company pension schemes, for example, local business owners face a multitude of challenges and we’re delighted to beable to provide our support.”
