A 72-year-old cyclist has completed an epic 1,000km (621-mile) off-road cycling challenge, raising funds for Farnham-based community arts charity Creative Response.
Ted Gomm rode his final 25 miles last week, passing the 1,000km mark in Rowledge alongside the charity’s chair, Steph Draper.
He then cycled to the charity headquarters at Vernon House in Farnham, where staff and participants welcomed him with cheers and applause.
Ted began his epic fundraising ride in July, covering around 20 miles a day across Surrey and Hampshire.
His journey took in many local landmarks, including Basingstoke Canal, Waverley Abbey, and the River Wey.
For Ted, even getting on his bike has been an achievement.
He said: “When I had mental health problems a few years ago, just leaving the house would be a challenge.
“But, encouraged by friends, I slowly began to get back out on my bike, and haven’t looked back.
“Cycling helps me keep well and undertaking a challenge like this is a great focus.
“I am really pleased to have been able to help raise much-needed funds for Creative Response. I have personally seen the benefits of this charity, and it deserves our support.”
Kathryn McManus, chief executive of Creative Response, said: “Community fundraisers like Ted are vital to ensure the charity can keep running weekly arts sessions.
“For people in the local community experiencing mental ill-health, our sessions provide social connection and opportunities for creative expression to promote wellbeing. What Ted has achieved is brilliant and inspires us all.”
Ted smashed his original fundraising target of £500, raising more than double that amount. His journey has captured the spirit of local community support and resilience, showing how personal challenges can make a real difference.
