A historic pub in the centre of Alton has been put up for sale after closing earlier this month.

The freehold of The George is being marketed by specialist pub estate agents Fleurets at a price of £425,000 plus VAT.

Nick Earee of Fleurets said: “We act on behalf of Punch Pubs & Co, and The George is on the open market. We have had viewings and interest but the property remains available.

“It’s been identified by Punch as a pub that doesn’t work for them. We are selling it with vacant possession and are in contact with a few parties.”

The Herald also contacted Punch Pubs & Co for comment but is yet to receive a reply.

The George has two gardens, a covered patio and a car park. It was known as a dog-friendly, traditional cask ale pub that served Sunday roasts and small plates, and hosted live music.

The pub was built in 1746 by troops from the 37th Foot who had just returned from the Battle of Culloden and is now a Grade II Listed building.

It was named Pub of the Year by the East Hampshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale in April 2017, but landlords Susannah and Jason Stredder closed it in August 2020 after 12 years at the helm because of financial difficulties during lockdown.

The George reopened after lockdown in April 2021, and reopened again following refurbishment in December 2021. It closed once more in February 2025, then reopened in August 2025, before the current closure on September 13.
