SANTA Claus came to town on Friday for the switching-on of Alton's Christmas lights.

The rain and wind held off as hundreds of people packed into the Market Square for the ceremony, led by mayor Allan Chick and town crier Stan Whitcher and compered by 'brightly lit' broadcaster Paul Le Feuvre.
