A Change.org petition to improve safety at a notorious junction north of Alton has reached an eye-catching milestone.

Some 2,222 people have now signed the ‘Change Golden Pot Crossroads’ petition started by Chris Eason following a serious crash at the Shalden junction on May 29.

Many signatories have commented to illustrate the problems at the junction of the B3349 Alton to Odiham road, Froyle Road and The Avenue.

Neil, from Marlow, wrote: “It is a nerve-wracking experience trying to cross this junction on a bicycle due to blind corners on the main road and often excess speed of vehicles.”

And Jay added: “Anyone who drives that way can see how dangerous it is. It desperately needs traffic lights or something before anyone else gets hurt.”

Chris has called for a reduced speed limit, speed cameras or a roundabout, saying there is “debris from previous accidents littering the road”.

Mark Kemp-Gee, Hampshire County Council ward member for Alton Rural, has made repeated calls for a roundabout - or traffic lights - for more than a decade.

The council has made some recent changes, including installing upgraded vehicle-activated signs, resurfacing parts of the carriageway, and improving road markings.

It said all petitions submitted to it were considered carefully and fully responded to in due course.

Shalden Parish Council has worked with Cllr Kemp-Gee to improve the crossroads, on things such as updating road markings and cutting back vegetation to increase visibility, and has objected to plans to turn the former Golden Pot pub at the junction into housing.

Fatal accidents occurred at the crossroads in November 2002 and October 2014, with other serious incidents reported in September and October 2016, August 2018, November 2019 and July 2024.

Previous petitions - to HCC in 2016 and Change.org in 2019 - received 550 and 3,774 signatures respectively.
