WAITROSE threw its hat further into the ring with a declaration that in the battle for supermarket supremacy in east Alton, and in particular on the Station Road site, it holds the trump card.

It owns the option to buy on the Mirion Technologies site and on a triangular piece of land, alongside the railway line, at the far end of the Kerridge industrial estate.
