A town centre worker has been shortlisted for an apprenticeship award, while her employer is also in the running for a top honour.

Lizzie Allen, 22, who has Down syndrome, has been named a finalist in an apprentice category at the Havant and South Downs College (HSDC) Apprenticeship Awards 2026, which take place during National Apprenticeship Week from Monday, February 9, to Sunday, February 15.

Her employer, Juniper, in Lavant Street, Petersfield, has also been shortlisted in the Employer of the Year category.

Lizzie works 15 hours a week at Juniper, a sustainable goods and refillery shop, where she is completing a customer services apprenticeship. She formally joined the business in September, having previously worked there on a casual basis since March 2021.

HSDC said Lizzie had been shortlisted in several categories in recognition of her progress, determination and contribution both in the workplace and elsewhere.

Before starting her apprenticeship, Lizzie gained work experience including a three-week placement at a beach café in August 2025, where she received positive feedback. One reference described her as “a delight to work with”, praising her reliability, teamwork and positive attitude.

At Juniper, Lizzie’s role includes customer service, operating digital tills, refilling containers, maintaining shop standards, answering product queries and supporting the wider team.

Juniper’s nomination for Employer of the Year recognises its inclusive approach to employment and apprentice support.

The team described Lizzie as “a real asset to our business”, adding: “She is always welcoming and friendly to customers, cheerful and positive, and has a great sense of humour.”

Outside of work, she is an accomplished swimmer and British champion, competing for Down Syndrome Swimming Great Britain.

Her achievements include breaking a junior world record in 2018, winning European bronze and holding the British Down Syndrome Swimming record for 50m breaststroke. She is due to compete at the World Championships in October.
