A “much-loved” mechanic was found dead in Fleet Pond Woods, an inquest heard this week.

Daniel Steven Jones, 40, of Pawley Close, Tongham, was described by his mother as “hard-working, generous and kind”.

His family attended Thursday’s hearing at Winchester Coroner’s Court, where they paid tribute to a man who loved his job and dreamed of settling down, getting married and having children.

His mother, Lisa Loveday, said Daniel – known to his family as Danny – was a “much-loved son” and had struggled with his mental health for years.

His father, Albert Jones, described his son as “a bit of a rogue, but polite and respectful”.

Dr Osama Ayad, a forensic psychiatrist with the North East Hants Community Mental Health Recovery Service, told the court he assessed Daniel on June 30, 2025.

“I would like to express my sincere condolences. I know it is a tragic event,” he said.

Daniel’s former partner, Charlene Campbell, said in a statement that they had known each other since childhood, as their parents were friends.

They reconnected four years ago, but their on-off relationship ended in the summer of 2025.

The court heard Daniel was reported missing by his father on November 8. He was found the following day after a search by Hampshire and Surrey police officers.

Assistant coroner Sunyana Sharma adjourned the hearing after new documents arrived and with further evidence still to be heard.

The inquest will resume on October 13.
