THE taekwon-do road is often long, and not without a few bumps on the way, but perseverance and focus is usually rewarded.

That was certainly the case for Francis Groves of the Alton Martial Arts Academy who has been awarded his 1st degree black belt in the Korean art of taekwon-do.

A seven-year journey culminated with a testing under the expert scrutiny of Tim Dunn (6th Dan), Luke Thompson (5th Dan) and Steven Arroyo (4th Dan).

It was a stern test of skill and character for the 15-year-old, with all three examiners being either current or former England coaches or competitors, including world champions. Young Groves came through with flying colours.

It’s an incredibly busy end to the year for the Alton Academy. In addition to the black belt testing, they have competed in four national competitions in five weeks, finishing with the biggest and toughest event – the British Open Championships.

Some 450 competitors from nine countries took part. Alton MA Academy sent a hand-picked team and with trademark drive, enthusiasm and spirit, they returned with an impressive haul of medals, including nine British champions.

Alton Martial Arts Academy run classes in taekwon-do, kickboxing and self-defence for all ages, including ladies-only daytime classes in kickboxing, fitness and self-defence.
