Haslemere Border Athletic Club (HBAC) members took on three distances at this year’s Serpent Trail, tackling challenging courses through the South Downs in hot conditions.

In the 20km race from Nyewood to Petersfield, Andy Philips led the HBAC contingent, finishing 11th overall in an impressive 1:31.25. Charlotte Nunns was first woman home in 2:10.30. They were joined by Jennifer Pearce, Niamh O’Hagan, Rowan Arthur, Rachel Lane, Vicky McLaren, Nicola Pratt and Caroline Rigby.

Paul Goddard, returning from injury, completed the 10km course in 1:26.36.

The 50km race provided a particularly tough challenge, with intense heat and hilly terrain testing even the most experienced ultra runners. HBAC ultra runners Amy Arthur, Tom Bampton and Louise Bampton were joined by several club members taking on their first ultra, while also raising funds for the newly-formed Haslemere Border Young Athletes, track update appeal.

Amy Arthur was the first HBAC runner home in 3:27.14, followed by Alex Matthews in 4:24.31. Tom Bampton, Yvonne Grayson, Karen Goddard, Louise Bampton, Lorraine, Helen Crainey, Beth Sutton, Yolanda Kloppers, Ann Varnes, Sarah Barnett, Annalisa Alexander and Emma Moore also completed the demanding course.

There were notable age-category performances, with Yvonne Grayson finishing second in her category, while Karen Goddard was placed fourth.

Meanwhile, HBAC’s annual Bowlhead Green Handicap Chase was held at the Punch Bowl. Club members tackled the demanding route from the Punch Bowl to Bowlhead Green and back via Thursley, finishing with the steep 3.5-mile climb back to the Punch Bowl.

The handicap produced an exciting finish, with Matt Smith catching Steve King in the final 100 metres to take the win. Karen Goddard finished third. Runners and supporters then enjoyed refreshments and the presentation while taking in the spectacular views from the Punch Bowl.
