CHAWTON Park’s ladies and men’s club champions, Margaret Holden and Adam White, were both victorious in the area finals of their respective National Champion of Champions, played out at Longmeadow IBC.
Margaret Holden was up against a formidable opponent, international player Julie Leake from Dolphin IBC (Poole). The result looked a forgone conclusion as Holden opened up a 16-6 advantage, but Leake, a previous winner of both the indoor and outdoor versions of this competition, came storming back to lead 17-16.
The players shared the next four ends and with the score at 19-19, Holden finished off with a double to secure a first-ever singles win over Leake.
The other area final pitted Adam White against Hampshire Liberty Trophy team-mate Chris Martin of East Dorset IBC. Martin had the better of the early exchanges, but White adjusted to the pace of the green and his opponent’s lead evaporated. The Chawton man romped to a 21-11 victory.
Chawton had a mixed bag over the week in other national competitions. Graham Robinson, David Sims and Peter Slingo secured a fine 18-10 win at Atherley IBC against a triple led by Richard Shelley.
Robinson then linked up with Ronnie Roberts for an all-Chawton National 0/60s Pairs match against Dick Holden and John Kellow. A close contest ensued and with two ends to play, Holden and Kellow led by one. But they lost form in the last two ends and Roberts and Robinson pulled away to win 24-16.
Graham Robinson and Robert Hutchinson lost by one shot to the Banister Park pairing of Mikey Comley and Steve Rice in a very low-scoring National Pairs match.
In the same competition, Dick Holden and Adam White travelled to Banister Park to play Dave and Rob Bines. The Chawton pair established a big early lead and ran out 22-8 victors. But there was no joy for Peter Slingo and Dave Atwell who lost 11-21 to the Moores father-and-son combination from Riverside IBC.
In another all-Chawton affair, Adam White defeated Terry Cull 21-13 in the National Singles.
Charlie Spear met Mike Slade (Banister Park) in the National 0/60s Singles. As usual, it was nip-and-tuck between this pair, with Spear edging it 21-18.
No joy for Chawton’s ladies in the National Triples as Lesley Johnson, Margaret Holden and Margaret Leppard lost 8-19 to Margaret Darkin’s trio.
Margaret Leppard returned to Atherley with Beryl Collier for the National 0/60s Pairs, only to lose again, this time by nine shots.
In friendly matches, Chawton ladies beat Hampshire Patrons by one shot and a Chawton mixed team defeated Oakley BC.
