SURREY Championship Division Four leaders Churt suffered only their second defeat of the season in a low-scoring game against Woking & Horsell.
The Churt wicket always favoured the bowlers and the home side looked to have done all the hard work after reducing Woking & Horsell from 84-2 to 108 all out.
The third-wicket pair of Stuart Warner and James Woods were going well for the visitors, but then spinners Rowley Marshall and Ben Mitchell came into the attack and Woking collapsed.
Marshall finished with 5-24 in seven overs and Mitchell claimed 3-13 in 6.4 overs.
Churt’s innings followed a similar pattern. After slumping to 13-3 against Tom Sharpless and Phill West, Mitchell and Marshall steadied things with a 50 stand. But both went in quick succession and Churt folded to Roger White who snapped up 4-12 to leave the leaders all out for 92 in the 31st over.
No such problems for Haslemere, the unbeaten Division Five leaders, who won by 56 runs at mid-table Kempton.
Chris Hooker and John Pederick both scored half-centuries as Haslemere made steady progress to total 209-7 in their 50 overs. The consistent Scott Boxall made 30 and Alex Hooker batted well in the later overs for 32.
Chris May made an early breakthrough when Kempton batted, but it was first-change Billy Boxall who made serious inroads, taking 3-10 in seven miserly overs.
At 68-6, Kempton were effectively out of the game, but number 7 Gary Porter made a defiant 52 not out and despite some good bowling by Alex Hooker (3-39) the home side managed to bat out their overs, finishing on 153-9.
