FARNHAM 2nd XI showed coolness under pressure to beat Weybridge II by just 12 runs at the Park (Surrey Championship 2nd XI Premier Div).
Weybridge had no hesitation bowling first on a muggy day and although skipper Jamie Strachan made a compact 30 at the top of the order, including a towering six, the visitors used the conditions well, reducing Farnham to 58-4 at one stage.
The middle order took responsibility, though, and Dan Jones, Russ Golding, Matt Crew and Matt Clarke staged valuable partnerships. Golding timed the ball nicely and Crew – top scorer with 40 – took the attack to Weybridge with powerful shots.
Despite some haphazard running in the final overs, Farnham posted a competitive 203.
Weybridge looked to be making light work of the target as they raced to 43-1 and then 93-2, but the introduction of spin changed the game, with Golding and Clarke bowling beautifully in tandem.
Clarke dismissed the top four, including Simran Singh for 44, but Weybridge were still favourites at 161-6, with skipper Adam Dean batting well. The spinners held their nerve, though, and finally it was Dom Ford and Ollie Godden who finished the job. Weybridge all out for 191, with Dean still there on 45 not out.
A depleted Farnham III were bowled out for 53 at Crondall when chasing Hampton Wick Royal’s modest 116 (3rd XI Div 2). Peter Goldsworthy was the pick of Farnham’s attack, taking 4-14 on a helpful wicket. Farnham’s reply lasted just 19 overs.
