FARNHAM School of Tae Kwon Do’s tournament squad returned from the GTI English Open Championships at Cheltenham with a seven-medal haul, including five golds, a silver and bronze.

Nine junior members, aged from eight to 16, competed across the disciplines of patterns and sparring.

Will Bryan won a final play-off in his patterns division to take home a thoroughly deserved gold.

Several other members also competed in patterns, with Dimitri Perricos and Oliver Contreras just missing out in a play-off for bronze in their respective divisions.

Will Bryan then claimed his and Farnham’s second gold medal of the day in his point-stop sparring division, winning a series of tough encounters, including a thrilling semi-final where he turned around a 5-2 deficit to win by 10 points to 5.

Dimitri Perricos followed up with gold in his point-stop sparring and impressed everyone with his competitiveness and good sporting attitude.

Farnham’s fourth gold of the day was won by the talented Kenzie Power who added to her tally of medals and titles at recent GTI English and British Championships in her point-stop sparring division.

The continuous sparring divisions saw yet more medals for the club. Tyla Nawrattel, the youngest squad member at eight years old, took bronze, while seasoned competitors, Archie Riley and Oliver Contreras battled their way through some hard bouts in their division, including several extra-time rounds, to produce an all-Farnham final. There was little to separate the fighters, but after another extra-time round, Riley prevailed to take gold, with Contreras settling for silver.

There was also a strong performance from Deborah West in patterns at her first national tournament.

Senior grades Sophie Raine and Ellie Houghton also gave gutsy and skilful displays in their sparring divisions.

The coaching team of Nick Nawrattel, Sara Maitland and head coach Tim Ayres-Townshend were assisted by squad captain Will Houghton.

Farnham Tae Kwon Do now prepare for the PUMA International Open later this month.
