ALTON 3, CHRISTCHURCH 1 (Sydenhams League Div I)
ALTON beat third-placed Christchurch far more comfortably then the score suggests at The Enclosure on Saturday.
This was despite the visitors starting like an express train. Alton weathered the storm and went on to dominate, creating far more chances than the higher-placed team.
Steve Battle and Andy Masson shot wide for Christchurch during that frenetic start before Regan Hitch tested Max Frampton at the other end with a shot from distance, the keeper getting down to push the ball against the post.
Joe Green, playing as a wing-back, was causing problems and from his pull-back, Scott Sanderson’s shot hit the upright. Gavin Muir then saw his effort headed off the line and it looked as though Alton were going to pay for these misses when Brandon Boontam put Christchurch ahead against the run of play.
The lead lasted less than two minutes, however. Sean Hayes’ free-kick was only half-cleared and Hitch pounced for the equaliser.
Green was the next Alton player to be denied by the woodwork, his shot bouncing off the crossbar, and in the second half Christchurch became more physical as they struggled to cope with the Brewers’ fast-flowing football on the slick 3G surface.
An over-zealous tackle by Marcus Cullen on Taylor Watts gave away a free-kick and Hayes’ delivery somehow found its way through a crowd of players to Sanderson who duly put Alton in front.
Things went rapidly downhill for Christchurch who had Cullen sent off for a second yellow card. A few minutes later, Hayes exchanged passes with Muir and shot home from 25 yards to give Alton a two-goal cushion.
Alton’s confidence surged and Sanderson, Matt Jackson – twice – and Muir all had chances to increase the lead.
But it was another three points for Alton and with the team changes made due to unavailability, manager Clive Ventham is faced with some tricky selection over the next few weeks.
Next up for Alton is a trip to Romsey this Saturday.
