TWO superb performances have sent Alton FC Ladies through to the final of the Women’s Southern Region Chairman’s Cup.
Alton beat Newbury Town in the quarter-finals (4-1 on penalties after the game finished 1-1) to set up a semi-final with Milton Keynes City.
It was played on Alton’s 3G pitch at The Enclosure on Sunday and the teams went in 1-1 at half-time, with Afiya Johnson putting away the rebound after Megan Lebbern’s initial shot for Alton’s goal.
Alton keeper Chelsea Fox was in inspired form, but could do nothing about the goal that put City ahead in the second half.
Again, Alton came back hard and a cracking shot gave Johnson her second goal. The tie was wide open at 2-2.
Alton had the scent of victory. Lebbern took on two defenders and slotted home the winner to send the home supporters into raptures.
To reach the final is a remarkable achievement for Alton Ladies who are having their first season at Regional level. A quarter of their squad are just 17 years old.
In the final, Alton will meet either Wycombe Wanderers or Barton Rovers who play their semi-final later this month.
The ladies travel from as far away as Southampton, Woking, Ascot, Basingstoke and Farnborough to play for Alton who also have their home-grown talent. Alton are currently a creditable fifth in the First Division Southern.
