ALDERSHOT Town have signed winger Jonny Giles on loan from Oxford United.

The 22-year-old, from Windsor, joins the Shots for the rest of the season, having been part of Oxford’s first-team squad in December.

Giles joined United in September 2015 after graduating from Durham University with a physics degree. He spent one month on loan with Southport, playing four matches

While at university, he played for Durham City and Ashington AFC, the latter managed by former England cricketer Steve Harmison, after beginning his career in the Maidenhead United youth team.

“I’ve been really impressed with the club and the set-up,” said Giles who has been training with the Shots squad over Christmas and watched both games against Woking. “In order for me to kick on and develop as a player, it’s good to get some regular game time, which hopefully I can achieve here. The intensity and the tempo of the training has been really good and that’s great for helping players to improve.”

Giles is the second player to join Aldershot with assistance from the new Boost the Budget scheme.

Shots Trust chairman, and club director Tommy Anderson said: “I’m delighted to welcome Jonny to the club. I’m pleased to have been able to assist Gary (Waddock) with this signing. It is the direct contributions of supporters, along with the various other fund-raisers we have held this season, which have enabled the club to now make our second signing from this scheme. We want this to be the second of many signings that we can help with going forward.”

Launched in September as the successor to the PlayerShare fund, Boost the Budget invites fans to contribute directly to Gary Waddock’s first-team playing budget. By donating £10 per month, supporters can help the Shots Trust towards their initial target of £30,000 – potentially the difference between a good and a great season.

* Defender Jack Saville has left Aldershot Town after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent. Saville, 25, extended his stay at the EBB Stadium into a second season, but has made just eight starts in 2016-17. The last of those came against East Thurrock in the FA Trophy first-round replay and, along with a further two substitute appearances this season, he has played 36 games for the club.

A graduate of the Reading and Chelsea youth academies, Camberley-born Saville turned professional with Southampton in 2009. He made 26 appearances for Barnet in 2014-15 when they won the Vanarama Conference title, before joining Aldershot in the summer of 2015.

* Aldershot’s final National League fixture of the season, against Braintree Town at the EBB Stadium on Saturday, April 29, will now kick-off at 12.15pm. All National League games on that day have been brought forward from their regular 3pm start to allow for coverage of one fixture by BT Sport.

* Scott Rendell’s Boxing Day hat-trick against Woking and subsequent Man of the Match award has earned him another prize from match sponsor Barons Farnborough BMW & MINI – the use of a new BMW i8. Rendell will have the use of the plug-in hybrid sports car, which retails at over £100,000, for a week.
