ROMSEY TOWN 1, ALTON 1
ALTON, going for a third successive win in the Sydenhams League Division One, had to be content with a draw, but this was probably a fair outcome to a hard-fought game.
And the Brewers traditionally find points hard to come by at Romsey’s By Pass Ground.
A low sun made life difficult for the goalkeepers at the top end of the ground, but in fact neither had a lot of work to do on a day when two good defences largely cancelled each other out.
Sean Hayes got a volley on target in the first minute, but a long stalemate followed.
Finally, 11 minutes into the second half, Alton broke through again and this time Scott Sanderson drove the ball home, following a low cut-back from Joe Green.
The visitors were ahead for just five minutes, though, Andy Turner equalising for Romsey with a close-range effort.
Both sides enjoyed good spells of pressure, but neither was able to really dominate as the defences continued to hold the upper hand.
Alton remain a handy eighth in Division One and aim to make further progress up the table in the last ten games of the campaign.
The Brewers now play two matches in four days against teams well below them in the table.
Alton host Andover New Street at The Enclosure this Saturday and, on Tuesday, they travel to Folland Sports.
