FARNHAM TN 4, HIGHWORTH TN 2
STRIKERS Mark Corbett and Matt Glass proved too hot for Highworth Town to handle as Farnham progressed to the next round of the FA Cup and an away tie with Tooting & Mitcham of the Ryman League Div I South on September 12.
The omens were not good for Farnham when, after six minutes, Toby Clark curled a 25-yard shot into the top corner to give Highworth the lead.
Four minutes later, Farnham equalised from their first decent attack, Corbett finishing from a tight angle.
The Worthians were enjoying most of the possession, but Farnham defended well and looked to hit on the counter-attack. Jonny Aitkenhead cleared a bobbling ball off the Highworth line and a speculative Glass strike forced a good save from Kurtis Sharkey.
The visitors shot themselves in the foot in the 17th minute when what should have been a simple clearance was blocked by Steve Ramsden who gratefully slid the ball home to put Farnham in front.
Richie Saunders headed against the crossbar at the other end, but Farnham again showed their predatory instincts when Corbett scored a carbon-copy of his first goal; 3-1 to Farnham.
Matt Petts saved well from Dan Drewett and the pattern continued in the second half – Farnham coolly soaking up the pressure and threatening on the break.
The next goal was going to be vital. Farnham were denied by Sharkey who saved with his feet, while Highworth had a goal ruled out for a foul.
With nine minutes to go, Petts pulled off an excellent save and the ball was cleared upfield to speed merchant Glass who ran 30 yards before finishing clinically to kill the game off.
‘TJ’ Bohane converted a penalty in the dying moments, but it was a mere consolation for the visitors.
