IT was a bad day for local sides on Saturday in the FA Cup, with Farnham Town and Badshot Lea amongst those beaten in preliminary round matches.

Godalming, relegated back to the Combined Counties League this season, beat Farnham 3-0 at Weycourt, albeit helped by two penalties, both expertly converted by skipper Lewis Taylor.

Godalming’s reward is a plum tie at Hereford in the first qualifying round on September 2.

A well-worked goal put Godalming in front on 20 minutes, Hakim Griffiths scoring with a low shot after an excellent run and cross by Shawn Lyle.

Farnham were still in the game at half-time and they almost equalised straight after the restart as Aaron Bufton saved at the feet of Matt Glass.

Almost immediately, the hard-working Griffiths was brought down and Taylor scored from the spot to double the lead.

Ten minutes later, Griffiths was again bundled over and again Taylor gave Jamie Cunningham no chance. Game over.

Badshot Lea 0, Moneyfields 3. Badshot Lea had a tough task against Southern League opposition and powerful striker Steve Hutchings struck a first-half hat-trick to send Moneyfields through to the next round.

Alresford Tn 0, Thatcham Tn 2. Manager Danny Robinson’s return to Alresford ended with victory for the Kingfishers. Thatcham opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Shane Cooper-Clark brought Harrison Bayley’s long ball under control and beat Dan Kempson from 12 yards.

Tom Sands missed an excellent chance to equalise as Alresford enjoyed some good possession, but Thatcham sealed victory in the second half. Robinson sent on Josh Helmore and the substitute provided the perfect cross for Joe Blount to guide his header home.

Binfield 1, Horndean 1. Horndean took the lead through Miles Everett, but later had Ash Howes sent off as they drew Saturday’s tie 1-1. However, the Deans stormed through in the replay on Tuesday, winning 3-0 to earn a home tie against Bodmin in the next round.

• Fleet Town, after drawing 1-1 with AFC Totton at the weekend, were thrashed 5-0 in the replay.

• Guildford City crushed Camberley 4-0 on Sunday. City are drawn at home to Knaphill in the first qualifying round.

• Hartley Wintney, who have hit the ground running in the Southern League, trounced Brockenhurst 5-1 in their FA Cup tie and now visit Premier side Basingstoke Town on September 2.

• Farnborough Town are drawn at home to Salisbury.
