Bedfont & Feltham 2, Farnham Town 4
FARNHAM Town’s quirky season took another twist on Saturday as boss Luke Turkington’s charges came from two goals down to stun Bedfont & Feltham.
Nick Medcraft and Matt Glass both scored twice as Town roared back to inflict the shellshocked Hounslow outfit’s first home defeat of the season.
But the victory, although welcome and cementing Town’s place in fourth in Division One of the Combined Counties League, sparked mixed feelings for the boss.
“It was quite a sombre day because it was two clubs who realised what could have been,” said Turkington.
“Third playing fourth and there was a realisation that both clubs have had chances to win this league and I think we’ve both thrown it away, but it was still very pleasing to go to their place and get the win.”
Farnham’s title challenge in a competitive league was effectively ended with a poor run of results in February while Bedfont’s own title ambitions have been derailed in the past three games with a 4-1 defeat at leaders Sheerwater, a 5-1 mauling at second placed Frimley Green, and now Saturday’s defeat against Farnham.
Farnham themselves have had the opposite problem this season, beating the teams at the top of the table but fatally losing to the teams at the bottom. Just a few short weeks ago Town beat Sheerwater yet were beaten at home by Cove and away at Fleet Spurs, the latter a particularly chastening 5-1 defeat.
“We knew we had it in us to beat Bedfont,” said Turkington, “but you look back at some of the poor games we have played and that terrible run in February killed us. The lesson we’ve learned is that you’ve got to play well every game and you can’t take other teams for granted.”
While it’s still mathematically possible for Town to win the league, and secure promotion back to the Premier Division after one year out, a top three finish is more realistic with home games against Bedfont & Feltham and Frimley Green to come as well as a trip to Epsom & Ewell.
Farnham made what Turkington described as a “comical” start to the game – going 2-0 down within half an hour when, first, goalkeeper Dease Kerrison dallied too long and had his delayed clearance kick charged down by Michael Capon before misjudging the flight of a corner to give Elliott Hayden a simple header at the back post.
“The game started horribly for us,” said Turkington. “They passed the ball well and they play very well on their home ground, but I said the only way they are going to get in is by our mistakes – and lo and behold we made two mistakes.
“We’ve had two comical errors and we’ve been punished. We’ve then had a goal that we could have scored from a yard out and haven’t and we’re thinking ‘is this going to be another day of what if?”
But Farnham are made of stern stuff when they’re in the mood and clearly have the quality as their fourth place in the league would suggest.
They were handed a lifeline on 33 minutes when Glass latched onto a ball over the top and rounded the goalkeeper before walking the ball into the net.
And from then on it was all Farnham.
Medcraft scrambled an equaliser from six yards 17 minutes from time before putting Town in front with a stunning 25-yard effort six minutes later which crashed in off the underside of the bar.
And Glass rounded off the scoring deep in stoppage time.
“We knew we had delivered a sucker punch blow at 2-1, and at 2-2 that there was only going to be one winner and it was definitely going to be us,” said Turkington who, along with assistant boss Lee Pollard, will come up against his former side Sandhurst Town at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.
