THE GAMES of Remembrance, marking 100 years since the end of the Battle of The Somme, proved extremely successful last month.
British Army men’s and womens teams entertained their German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) counterparts, culminating in two charity fund-raising fixtures on November 16 in Staffordshire.
Army Women were 3-1 victors in their fixture at the home of the England National Football Centre, St George’s Park.
The men’s match followed at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, where the guest of honour was Sir Bobby Charlton. This time, the Bundeswehr ran out winners, 2-1.
British men’s and women’s teams look forward to travelling to Germany next June to form part of the German Armed Forces Day.
The Army U23 team defeated Combined Counties League Division One side Ash United 6-0 in the charity fixture in aid of Ataxia UK at the Shawfield Road ground. The goals were scored by Cfn Thompson (2) (SFSG), Tpr Johnson (2) (RTR), Pte Laidler (7 Regt RLC) and Gnr Barnes (4 Regt RA).
The Army FA supported the Premier League’s U12 Truce Tournament held at the Military Stadium. The event started with a memorial service and the competing teams were Leicester, Norwich, Tottenham, Swansea, West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea, Everton, Reading, Derby County and West Ham, the eventual winners.
The postponed Southern Counties Cup fixture between the Army and Middlesex will be played at the Aldershot Military Stadium on Wednesday, January 25 (ko 7.45pm).
The Aldershot FA Senior Cup quarter-final between the Army and Chertsey Town is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21 at the Military Stadium (ko 7.45).
The revived Army versus Reserves fixture is confirmed for Sunday, February 12 at the Military Stadium (ko 11am).
Army Women continue their Southern Counties Cup campaign on Wednesday, January 18 against Sussex (Military Stadium, ko 7.45).
The U23 team have two fixtures in January at the Military Stadium. They entertain Tooting & Mitcham U21s on Tuesday, January 10 (ko 7.30pm) whilst on Tuesday 31 January Bristol Rovers Academy are the visitors on Tuesday, January 31 (ko 1.30pm).
Army football men’s head coach WO1 Simon Bell has joined Leek Town as first-team coach.
