CONFIDENT Aldershot Town boss Danny Searle has vowed “the goals will come” after watching his side pick up a valuable point in a goalless draw at Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.
The Shots have only managed to find the net 17 times in 19 games so far this season, the second lowest in the National League behind rock-bottom Chorley’s 13, but Searle is adamant that that will all change after a subtle shift in tactics over the past couple of games.
Tuesday’s goalless draw in Hertfordshire, which leaves the Shots one place above the drop zone, followed hard on the heels of a cruel 1-0 defeat against Harrogate Town on Saturday when Jack Emmett broke plucky Aldershot’s hearts with a stoppage-time winner.
“The past two games we haven’t created as much as we have previously but we are starting to make sure we shore things up at the back, especially after conceding four at Bromley, and we will be looking to make sure we get that right,” said the Shots boss, “and with that we have to accept that that will limit us a little bit going forward because we have got to build from the back. But we are still creating chances and the goals will come.”
Both teams had their chances to break the deadlock in front of a poor crowd of just 619 on Tuesday night, with Shots keeper Mitch Walker keeping out two efforts from Sorba Thomas and Tom Champion hitting the post while Boreham Wood goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore did well to keep out a stinging shot from Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong’s effort before Jack Powell’s late chip hit the crossbar.
But while the goal-shy Shots’ troubles in front of goal have been well documented this season, Searle was delighted by a second successive strong showing from his back line and goalkeeper.
“The defence were excellent again tonight which was a real positive for us, and any clean sheet and point away from home is always a good result,” he said.
And he added: “We are not where we want to be obviously, no-one wants to be in the position we’re in, and realistically we know we have got a lot of work to do, but we knew that at the start of the season.
“We’re building and we’re working players out still, but it’s coming and it will get better.”
