Aldershot Town manager John Coleman was disappointed after his side’s seven-game unbeaten run came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at home to National League high-fliers Rochdale.

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe’s double gave the visitors all three points in front of a crowd of 2,822 at the EBB Stadium.

“It's disappointing,” said Coleman.

“We were playing top of the league and they were expected to win, but I expected us to win.

“I think Rochdale came in a fragile state, but we gifted them the first goal.

“We were wasteful with our opportunities before they scored and after they scored.

“We had this propensity to play the ball backwards and sideways and we were going nowhere.

“Rochdale dropped really deep and were there to be got at, but we didn't get at them.

“Rochdale had three shots on our goal all day. I'm disappointed Dieseruvwe got the shot off for the second one and I think Coniah Boyce-Clarke will be disappointed it's gone in. They had another chance where we were trying to go forward and they countered on us, but that's it.

“Rochdale didn't come in a good frame of mind and were there to be beat, but they could counter on us at will in the second half because we got a bit desperate after conceding such a sloppy goal. Our passing was nowhere near up to speed.

“We didn't take our chances when they presented themselves. There were three or four good chances. I think if Kwame Thomas' header goes in we probably go and win the game. That's what's made us good – we've been clinical in our finishing.

“We were poor with our passing. The volunteers and the people who work on the ground did a great job to get the game on but the pitch was nowhere near conducive to playing football.

“It was difficult to pass the ball but our choice of passes I thought was poor. We gave the ball away too cheaply.

“I'm not going to hide behind Rochdale being top of the league because at this moment in time we're a more in form team than them. I think that showed in the first half.

“We were the ones on the front foot. We got picked off for the goal they scored and then they blazed a shot over. That was the sum total of them going near our goal.

“I'm disappointed we've lost the game. I'm raging inside about losing a game that was winnable. That's the frustrating thing for me.

“We didn't have that impetus to score. We didn't put enough balls in the box in the first half and then when we did put the balls in the box in the second half they weren't quality balls or we didn't get people in there. When the chances did present themselves, we didn't take them.

“We didn't put the ball into areas where it can benefit you and we were guilty of playing 20 to 30 passes and then going long right through to their keeper. Our passing was poor and that ultimately has cost us the game.

“We were in the game right to the end and I think if we had scored at any time we probably would have scored again. The fans stuck with us the whole game.”
