HIGH up on the South Downs, the Dyke Golf Club course is not the place to be when the wind blows, as it did for the visit of Cowdray Park Seniors. However, the home side were made to work hard for their 41/2-31/2 victory.
The Dyke’s remarkable member, 93-year-old Cliff Stuart, strode around the course, carrying his bag, and speedily won his match 6&5, playing with Ray Dennett.
Over his golfing life, Cliff has been as low as 2 handicap and plays off 23 these days, still able to outdrive his colleagues at times. Four years ago, he converted to playing left handed.
Cowdray’s Alan Godfree and Bill Hummerston were the biggest winners of the day, 7&6, but the match went to The Dyke.
