TWO rounds of gross 81 gave Jay Mcquitty an eight-stroke margin as he won the Worldham Golf Club Men’s Championship from last year’s winner, Steve Smiley, who had rounds of 88 and 82.

In blazing sunshine, with a very firm course and fast greens, Mcquitty, handicap 7, had nine pars on his way to Saturday’s 81 and followed up with two birdies and eight pars on the Sunday.

Nick Kellie, who did not fare too well on the first day, hit back with an 82 on Sunday to finish third with a total of 177.

The Handicap Trophy was won by Mike Adams (hcp 29) with net scores of 69 and 71 to pip James Connor (hcp 19) by one stroke after he recorded 65 and 76.

Winner of the Alan Ponking Trophy for higher handicaps was Brian Norris.

In the Ladies’ Championship, Lorna Paterson, playing off 11, had a superb Saturday round of 77 and although her Sunday round did not match that, she finished with a gross 168 (77, 91) to finish 20 shots ahead of Froz Woolston who shot 93 and 95.

The Handicap winner was Joanne Wilson (hcp 25) with net 70 and 75, one shot ahead of Barbara Hogg (hcp 20) on 71, 79.

The Division Two winner was Olivia Southern with a gross 205 (106, 99), while Patsy Colquhoun shot 101, 107 for second place.

Handicap winner was Di Kellie with a net 144 (68, 76) from runner-up Clare Wright (62, 83).

A nine-hole stableford championship was held for the first time. The men’s winner was Ben Homewood with 19 points, on countback from Steve Smiley. Barbara Hogg was the ladies’ winner with 20 points, three ahead of Di Baycroft.

The ladies’ Mo Mitchell Greensomes, with a higher handicapper paired with a lower handicapper, was won by Liz Hind and Judy Evans with a net 64 (gross 92).
