A dramatic change of scenery awaited two paraglider pilots from the Petersfield-based Sky Surfing Club recently.
Russell Winters and Jon Stockley travelled to the Lake District to participate in the Lakeland Charity Classic – the Buttermere Bash – over the first weekend of June.
Organised by the Cumbria Soaring Club, the classic is a unique paragliding event – less a competition and more an informal social occasion held in some of England’s most spectacular scenery, with particular focus on fundraising for good causes and having fun.
Winters said: “The Buttermere Bash has always been something I wanted to experience – a free-flight festival in my own country.
“It fell right in the middle of a road trip holiday my partner and I had planned.
“Luckily it took place during a period of settled weather which provided perfect conditions for chilling out, swimming, paddle boarding, drinking and, more importantly, flying.
“I did manage three flights – just once each day was enough for me!
“The hike up – not even as far as the hilltop – was one hour and 40 minutes each time in lovely hot conditions.
“The views from over the lake were unmatched and the atmosphere was electric.
“There was lots of entertainment for everyone, including wingsuit fliers, skydivers, hot air balloons and a twin turbine jet pack paramotor.
“It was an awesome weekend in a superb setting. I can’t wait until next year’s Bash!”
