FARNHAM’S newest floorball team are Southern Venom, a combination of fathers and offspring. And the team registered their first victory in Division 2 of the South-East Floorball League on Sunday.

In their first match, Southern Venom were outclassed 5-1 by a Solent Floorball Club side.

But Venom bounced back in spectacular style against Brentford Sparta, the Farnham side dominating throughout to win 12-4. Quick passing and great shooting from old and new players alike never let the London team into the game.

Southern Venom player/ coach Dean Smith, who has created the team after relinquishing his rugby managerial role, scored one of the goals.

The Friday before saw the biggest turn-out for a Farnham floorball event. The Farnham Primary Schools Open Tournament was attended by ten teams from eight schools at Farnham Sports Centre, watched by a crowd of around 100.

The event was run by Surrey’s largest floorball coaching organisation, Premier Sport, in partnership with Farnham Unihockey & Floorball Club. Teams from as far away as Camberley entered, some having only recently taken up Britain’s newest Olympic-recognised sport.

Rowledge Primary School came out on top, scoring 15 goals in five short matches. St Polycarps were worthy runners-up and Rowledge’s second team came third.

One goal was scored as a result of a 270-degree ‘wrap-around’ shot which is now on YouTube, thanks to a GoPro camera hidden inside the goal net.

The winners’ trophy was presented by the director of Active Surrey, Campbell Livingstone.

St Polycarps also scored highly in the radar speed-shooting competition, with Dominic Porter taking home a £20 voucher presented by the captain of the GB U19 team who was showing floorball videos at the event.
