FARNBOROUGH Tennis J and H teams, both of Division Four, produced one of the closest match so far in the Aldershot Table Tennis League’s Handicap Cup competition.
The H team narrowly took the first set when Michael Wolfe edged past Ken Lewington, but the Js came back strongly as Graham Dorey defeated John Page and Keith Johnson beat Roger Whichelow.
The first doubles went to the H side, but Dorey then beat Wolfe and although Whichelow saw off Lewington, Johnson outplayed Page to put the Js ahead again.
The next doubles again went to the H players, but the J team came straight back, Dorey proving too strong for Whichelow.
The H team had to win the next two singles, which they duly did as Wolfe beat Johnson and Page overcame Lewington.
For the first time since the opening set, the H team were ahead in the match. The final set was a doubles and honours were shared, meaning that the H team squeezed into the quarter-finals.
Other matches were more straightforward. Frimley C beat their D team 7-3, thanks to the efforts of Gary Nicholson, Anthony Connelly and Vasco Correira.
Tennis C easily beat their E clubmates, with Shaun Newbold and and Colin Baggott both unbeaten, while Tennis D defeated Braybrooke A 7-5. Lucas Higgins, Stuart Middlemiss and Pu Zhang all won twice for Tennis.
