A FARNHAM man has found himself £360 out of pocket after being fined for his role in illegally dumping waste in a field near Alton in May.

Ben Chapman, 32, of The Chantrys, pleaded guilty to not carrying the proper paperwork needed to handle and dispose of waste.

Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court heard Chapman had been contracted to remove waste from a home renovation in April 2017.

But the same waste was found in early May dumped in a field at Scaifs Farm, Alton.

An investigation by East Hampshire District Council found evidence connecting the waste first to the contractor and subsequently back to Chapman.

In court Chapman argued he had not fly-tipped the waste but had instead transferred it on to others.

However, he admitted he did not have the correct papers to prove the transfer had taken place, an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Magistrates fined Chapman £180 and ordered him to pay costs of £150 and a victim surcharge of £30.
