The villages of Bighton and Gundleton near Alresford could have the slowest broadband in Hampshire.

One green cabinet connects hundreds of families and some residents have speeds of less than five megabits per second. The national average is 64mbps.

At a recent Hampshire County Council meeting, Bighton resident Jonathan Booth pleaded with Openreach for the area to be included in Project Gigabit, which will bring speeds of 1,000mbps within eight years.

Another resident said: “Some of the cables running to the houses aren’t even copper ones – they’re aluminium.”

The firm said it is working with residents on a solution.
