A building society with a branch in Alton High Street has been named the Best Building Society in the British Bank Awards 2025.

The Newbury Building Society also beat 12 other building societies to win the Best Building Society Savings Provider award.

Chief executive Phillippa Cardno said: “We are honoured to have received these prestigious awards. As a mutual building society, our customers are always at the heart of everything we do, which makes these awards, which are based entirely on their feedback, especially meaningful.

“They stand as a testament to the unwavering commitment and consistently high standards delivered by our people, both to our customers and to one another.

“This achievement reflects the dedication of every colleague across our branch network and head office - it is a collective success that the entire Newbury team can take immense pride in.

“I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to our customers for taking the time to vote and share their experiences. Their support continues to inspire us to evolve and improve.”

The British Bank Awards are run by financial review site Smart Money People and are in their 11th year. They are decided by votes from customers, with 178,000 cast this year.

The society, whose Alton branch celebrates its 50th birthday this year, was also named Trusted Quality Provider at the UK Customer Satisfaction Awards 2025.

It has 78,000 members, 190 employees and ten branches across Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, with its head office in Newbury.
