Two Labradors who have struggled to swallow food and water have been given a helping paw by an East Hampshire veterinary practice.

Debbie Foster wants to thank St Peter’s Vets publicly for helping ten-year-old Winnie and three-year-old Kizzy to live their dog lives to the full.

The dogs are regular patients at the practice in Petersfield as they suffered from a condition called megaoesophagus, which prevents them from eating or drinking normally.

The incurable condition causes the oesophagus to become enlarged and lose musical tone, with food often becoming trapped on the way down.

But it can be managed and the supportive care and monitoring given by St Peter’s, coupled with the early diagnosis, means that Winnie and Kizzy have received the right nutrition and help.

“Winnie and Kizzy are lovely dogs, and we have been working closely with Debbie to keep them happy and healthy,” said Matt Tyler, one of the clinical directors at St Peter’s Vets.

“We regularly help Debbie review and adjust their management, to make sure their needs are being met and ensure they enjoy a good quality of life.

“Debbie is an exceptionally dedicated and caring owner, and both dogs are doing really well.”

Debbie, who lives in Droxford, has praised Matt and nurse manager Emma Clark for the care and support they have given her pedigree chums.

She said: “Matt has been our trusted family vet for many years, and his dedication goes far beyond medical expertise.

“He diagnosed Winnie’s megaoesophagus when she was 12 weeks old and since then has been an absolute lifeline for our dogs, providing unwavering support and genuine care.”
