WHERE else would you find one vicar grilling burgers and another vicar selling jigsaws?

The answer is the Parish of the Resurrection summer fete held in the grounds of St Lawrence Church in Alton.

On a typical early summer day, on June 25, complete with a torrential downpour, members of the four churches of the parish ran all the traditional stalls, including a coconut shy, tombola, plant stall and a bouncy castle to keep the little ones entertained.

The fete was declared open by town councillor Dean Phillips, the deputy mayor of Alton, and townsfolk and visitors enjoyed the stalls and the peaceful ambience of the historic St Lawrence Church.

With tea and cake in abundance served from the design award-winning ‘Pod’, the fete epitomised a quintessentially English event.

Organiser Tim Codling, churchwarden with responsibility for St Lawrence, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the grounds and the church.

“Also, our four churches – St Lawrence and All Saints in Alton, St Peter’s at Beech, and Holybourne’s Church of the Holy Rood – work so well together in making such a popular community event happen.

“We raised just over £1,400 toward our ongoing costs of running the parish, but best of all was to welcome people into the beautiful grounds and church building.”
