A COUPLE got a surprise when they found one of their hens had laid a “whopper” of an egg, the biggest they have ever produced during their 20 years of keeping hens – but they have yet to crack it!

It was during last Friday morning’s egg collection in the garden of their Medstead home that they noticed one standing out from the rest, and when Helen and Roy Umlandt popped it on the scales it weighed a massive 102 grams.

“It is the biggest egg we have had. The only other (big) one was only 95 grams,” said Helen. “But we don’t know which hen laid it. What was a bigger surprise was that they (the hens) are all around five years old and getting past egg laying.

“We don’t know if it has a double yoke. It is a whopper, and it’s fun. It certainly could make a very big omelette!”
