GOING blue proved a great success for Kate Dando and Sally May, who decided to top up the £400 raised at the annual Alzheimer’s fundraising afternoon in the summer by getting 100 people to sponsor them to dye their hair a jaunty shade.
In September, the daredevils emerged from the Hair salon on Market Street, Alton, with their locks a deep shade of blue which, they said, “caused great interest and amusement among our friends”.
As a result they raised £2000 – £1,000 of which has gone toward research into Alzheimer’s while a cheque for the remainder was presented to Dementia-Friendly Alton during a day of entertainment at Orchard House on the run up to Christmas.
The cheque was received on behalf of the group by Karen Murrell and it will be used for the Singing In the Brain project and to take Alzheimer sufferers on outings.
Mrs Dando, who leads Alton’s All Saints’ Hard of Hearing Group, said: “For the cheque presentation Sally and I put a few sprays of blue in our hair.
“We kept it blue for two weeks in September and it was horrible and sticky but it helped us to reach our goal.
“We wanted to have some money for research but also local projects and outings for the friends and their families.”
