ON Good Friday morning, around 200 Christians from churches in Alton gathered at the Harvest Church for the annual Easter Walk of Witness.

After a Bible reading and prayer, they walked around the town behind a large cross, stopping briefly at the Alton Methodist church and All Saints before gathering in the Market Square to pray and sing.

The band of the Salvation Army led the crowd in a rousing hymn written by Charles Wesley and Ben Burge, the pastoral assistant of the Butts Church, led in prayer.

The walk ended at St Lawrence Church where coffee and hot cross buns were served.

Harvest Church spokesman John Jacobs said: “In this day and age where some would have us believe that the church is in decline and has no relevance to modern life, the town of Alton shows that the Christian faith is alive and well, and relevant to many of its residents.”
