ST Lawrence School is now a Fair Active School, having received an award this week in recognition of the range of activities undertaken by pupils in staff during Fairtrade Fortnight.

The school has learned a lot about Fairtrade using the classroom resources available on the Fairtrade website.

Key stage one children entertained visitors, among them Reverend David Hinks and Jo McGregor, who talked about Fairtrade and what it really means to the farmers.

Pupils from years three and six visited neighbouring Amery Hill School and enjoyed playing African drums and Gamelan.

Toward the end of the fortnight, Year 4 children visited Waitrose to find out what Fairtrade goods they sell while Year 5 visited Sainsbury’s. Both supermarkets in the town were “very welcoming” and after a talk allowed the children to embark on a Fairtrade treasure hunt. The children left with Fairtrade chocolate and bananas.

The school’s Fairtrade ambassadors ran a quiz in their classes – with winners receiving a Fairtrade chocolate bar.

Deputy headteacher Fiona Micklefield said: “We have also seen some fantastic examples of Fairtrade homework.”

The St Lawrence celebration of Fairtrade culminated in a festival at school where parents and governors were invited along to find out what the children had been learning. They were then welcomed to the Fairtrade Café hosted by Year 5 pupils in the hall.

Mrs Micklefield added: “Our Fairtrade ambassadors were very pleased with how the fortnight went with all that they had planned.

“They are now busy promoting the Fairtrade real Easter egg in school, ready to collect orders in time for Easter!”
