ALTON’S Martin Read Foundation Annual Festival will return on Sunday, May 1 at Alton College – in memory of the college’s former head of music.
Now in its eighth year, the festival will celebrate contemporary music, with a day of workshops, talks and rehearsals from 10am followed by a concert at 6.30pm.
It offers opportunities to sing and play, with either the:
- Flexible Ensemble: all instruments Grade 5 (or equivalent) and up are welcome – MRF alumnus Ellen Drewe will direct her new piece; or
- Scratch Choir: SATB, some sight-reading experience, helpful – David Gibson, conductor, will direct short contemporary pieces with piano accompaniment.

From 3.30pm to 5.30pm, three Martin Read Foundation award holders will be In Conversation with composer-in-residence Dan Keen and guest composer Alan Bullard, talking about their creative processes.
This will be followed by the concert, from 6.30pm to the festival’s close at 7.45pm, featuring performances by students, as well as several premières and performances from the earlier workshops.
