AS the new year dawns, Hampshire Hops has been planning ahead for its second harvest.
So far, the East Worldham-based grower has cut all crowns down, and started to re-string in preparation for the new shoots in spring.
Once the new string is in place, the field will be turned and it will be constantly cutting the excess shoots to allow two strong stems to grow and flourish for harvest.
The team is looking for volunteers who would be willing to give any hours from one single day to three days a week through late spring and early summer to help them trim the excess shoots.
The volunteers will need to be happy to work outdoors in all weathers, with appropriate clothing, and not afraid of consistent labour! As the evenings get lighter, the team will be happy to accommodate anyone wanting to work evening hours, as well as weekends.
“The more volunteers they have, the easier the work will be, so feel free to get friends together and create a team for a day,” said Oliver Wardle from Hampshire Hops.
At present specific dates can’t be given, as the hops rely on Mother Nature – and if last year’s Beast from the East and scorching summer is anything to go by, she can be quite unpredictable.
Oliver and the team will put on a few pot luck dinner evenings or barbecues to say thank you to any volunteers, as well as a free bine to any budding home-brewers.
“You will need your own transport and although Hampshire Hops can’t offer accommodation, there is space for self contained camping should you wish,” Oliver added.
Anyone interested in helping the team for a few days can contact Hampshire Hops on 01420 86229 or e-mail [email protected] and ask for Ciarran, who will be more than happy to provide more information and tours of the field.
Oliver concluded: “The team look forward to hearing from you and hopefully spending a few days out in the fresh air with you in the spring.”
