ALTON Lions Club president Atul Patel was in town recently to present a cheque in the sum of £622 to Susi Peers, manager of Alton’s St Michael’s Hospice shop.

A Lions spokesperson said: “The donation was made in memory of former Alton Lion John Yeomans, who passed away earlier this year in the caring embrace of St Michael’s Hospice.”

Based in Basingstoke, St Michael’s Hospice has been serving the community of north Hampshire for more than 25 years.

The spokesperson added: “The shop in Alton High Street forms an active part of the local community and the donation also recognised staff support for the Alton Classic Car Show in September.”

Run by Alton Lions in partnership with Alton Town Council, the event raised just over £1,200, half of which went to the Alton town mayor’s chosen charity – The Kings Arms – and half to Alton Lions for use within the community.

Also pictured at the cheque handover is local businessman and Wey Valley Radio presenter Dean Phillips, who was master of ceremonies for the car show and helped forge the link between the Lions and the shop.
