Tributes have been paid to a woman well known in Alton for her dog-training activities.

Mary Fairley, who died on March 24 this year, was born in western Scotland but eventually moved south of the border and spent the majority of her life in the Alton area.

In her younger years Mary travelled all over the world. She was an accomplished artist, cattery owner, barmaid, driver for and senior member of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, and a long-term dog trainer.

Mary, of the Alton and District Dog Training Club, held her dog-training classes in Chawton Village Hall.

She also ran many dog shows at local village fetes and for more than 20 years organised the annual Kennel Club-licensed Companion Dog Show in Anstey Park, which featured pedigree, novelty and obedience classes.
