ALTON will see the launch of a new, fun dance group for adults on Thursday (February 27).

The Alton Maypole Dancers will meet at Wootey Junior School and will be led by ex Royal Ballet choreographer Poppy Bastin.

This is a new venture for Poppy who has always been fascinated by the maypole and by the potential of choreographing clever and engaging dances around it.

While more often associated with children, maypole dancing was originally for adults.

Poppy said: “It is a vastly underestimated dance form which requires no partner, caters for all abilities of dancer and has a wonderful community aspect to it.”

No previous dance experience is needed and there are no fees, just donations at the end of each session to cover the cost of the room.
