Farnham’s MP has launched a petition calling on TG Jones and the Post Office to guarantee the future of the town’s main post office.

The future of Farnham’s post office on The Borough remains uncertain after the catastrophic rebrand from WH Smith to TG Jones meant the high street chain underwent major nation restructuring.

No formal closure of the Farnham branch has been announced however an approved plan by High Court on allows for the loss of up to 150 TG Jones outlets.

Like most people in the town, Greg Stafford MP doesn’t want to see the branch stamped out, as the Post Office provides a wide range of essential everyday services that people in Farnham depend on.

These include sending and collecting parcels and mail, passport applications and Check & Send, vehicle tax renewals, identity verification, and bill payments. Losing the counter would create real inconvenience for residents of all ages and risk weakening the high street further.

Mr Stafford said: “This is a clear message to both TG Jones and the Post Office: our community needs certainty, and we need it now.

“Residents deserve to know that this important service will remain available in the town centre.”

A spokesperson for TGJones said: “The restructuring plan is ongoing and there has been no announcement as to the closure of any TGJones stores.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Farnham Post Office inside TG Jones store is open as normal and customers should continue to visit the branch for their cash and banking needs and the wide variety of parcel carrier services that it offers.

TG Jones had its Restructuring Plan approved by the High Court on 1 July, which includes seeking new commercial terms with landlords for the majority of their estate.

“There have been some resignations for certain locations, but not Farnham.”
