ALTON Convent Prep School have welcomed district MP Damian Hinds to a special assembly.

Along with the newly-elected members of the Pupil Council, the youngsters were enthralled to learn a little about the process of becoming an MP. They were surprised to discover that Parliament consists of 650 elected members and that each MP represents a particular constituency.

Mr Hinds explained how an MP should be looking at how to improve life nationwide but also have a special interest in local issues, such as education, police and housing.

Pupils learned a little more about democracy and representing other people’s views and were able to ask questions.

Year six pupil Henry Blackmore said: “He made politics sound interesting!”
