THE Alresford Agricultural Show attracted thousands of visitors to Tichborne Park last Saturday for the traditional rural fixture.
With an ever eclectic mix of countryside activities, displays, demonstrations and countless stalls, the event succeeded again in providing a great day out for the whole family.
Show secretary Val Watley said that, although numbers were marginally down on last year, while walking around the event it “didn’t feel like it” as “the rows were packed”.
“There was a continual buzz on the showground until late afternoon when the rain started,” she added.
“Even in the rain, the Alresford Rugby Club competed in the tug-of-war and the vintage and modern tractor display continued despite the drivers in open vehicles getting soaked!
“Highlights of the day included The Shetland Pony Grand National.
“The crowds were encouraging the riders to go as fast as they could, the elegant Iberian Horse Display to music, and the ever popular Grand Parade of Champion Livestock.
“New for this year was the Woodcraft Village and Juggling Jake which proved very popular with our visitors.
“There was a constant stream of visitors to the animal lines, especially the pig tent where this year we had a litter of piglets.”
This year’s Alresford Show also saw another giant pig take to the arena as part of Hampshire Food Fare’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
The hog, featured in the local food group’s logo, was brought to life by the residents and workshop participants of The Lantern Community near Ringwood. Constructed from papier mache and straw, the giant pig was mounted on a tall stick and displayed on the Alresford Show’s traditional cart along with a selection of local produce.
The Lantern Community creates “life-enhancing opportunities” for adults with learning disabilities.
