Fernhurst-based cycling club a3crg produced two world champions in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Dundee.

Sarah Matthews of Fernhurst won gold in the 60-64 individual women’s time trial and Angela Carpenter of Chichester won gold in the 55-59 individual women’s time trial.

Angela said: “This is about the only event where we race against an international field.”

Sarah said: “When I crossed the line I knew I’d given it everything and that I couldn’t have ridden harder. I was absolutely stunned when I discovered I’d won.”

David Collard-Berry, team principal, said: “The team have won a number of national events and hold national records, but winning gold in a World Championship is quite a step up, and to have two is a giant leap.

“It certainly makes us the most successful amateur sports team in Fernhurst, if not West Sussex.”
