ALTON impressed to clinch a 4-2 win at Amesbury in the Premier Division of the Wessex League.

After conceding an early goal, Alton showed a quality that proved too much for the Wiltshire side.

Matt Benham and George Bowerman put in impressive performances in a good team effort as they eased to a deserved victory.

Kieran Greene was forced to make an excellent save in the opening salvos, and the home side took the lead after five minutes.

A scruffy 25 minutes of football from both sides continued before a lovely bit of football saw Alton level.

Bowerman produced a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Benham who produced a composed finish to level the scores.

The equaliser sparked Alton’s attacking intent with Jack Fowler on the right side and Liam Knight on the left prominent, although Bowerman was always the focal point of their best moves, holding the ball up with great strength.

It was Bowerman’s hold-up play which created Alton’s second goal, as he knocked the ball out wide to Fowler who found Oli Graham to finish left footed from the edge of the area.

The next goal was always going to be important and after 53 minutes it was Alton who struck, when a long ball from Ed Dryden found Bowerman, and Fowler ran on to his pass to fire across the goal and into the net.

Alton created other chances and looked in control but then some poor defending saw Amesbury reduce the arrears with a soft goal.

Oli Page came on for Fowler, and a few minutes later Andy Coulson for Knight - and the substitutes had a positive impact for Alton.

Page controlled the ball well on his chest and then went on a driving run before hitting a cross to Bowerman, who fired home.

Some teams often refer to substitutes as "impact players" - and this was certainly true of Coulson, who was very direct when he was introduced, having three shots, two on target.

The result saw Alton move up to eighth place in the table.

On Saturday they entertain AFC Stoneham (3pm) in the league, followed next Tuesday by a trip to Horndean (7.45pm), again in the league.
